How to Create a Cosy Lounge This Winter
How to Create a Cosy Lounge This Winter

The winter chill has well and truly set in, and it's not going away anytime soon. What do you need to keep the winter blues away? A cosy lounge! A warm, inviting space can transform dark evenings into a sanctuary of comfort. Here’s how to transform your lounge into a blissful retreat on even the coldest of days, without spending a small fortune.

1. Layer Your Textiles

Winter is the ideal time to embrace layers. Think soft throws, plump cushions, and thick curtains to keep the cold at bay. Choose materials such as wool, velvet, or faux fur to add a touch of luxury. Drape a chunky blanket over your sofa to burrow into on movie night or add a few oversized cushions for instant warmth. Layering not only leans into that snug aesthetic you're going for but also provides practical insulation against the season’s chill.

2. Incorporate Ambient Lighting

Lighting will play a crucial role in setting the mood of your lounge - particularly with the short days and long nights of winter. Opt for warm, ambient lighting to create a relaxing atmosphere, with a combination of floor lamps, table lamps, and fairy lights for a layered effect.

Candles are another excellent choice with their gentle, flickering glow. Consider scented candles with fragrances like cinnamon, pine, or vanilla to evoke the spirit of the season... but keep them at a safe distance from your textiles. A house fire is definitely not the sort of warmth you're going after.

3. Add a Luxurious Rug

If you want to create a snug, comfortable space, then you need a rug. It's no coincidence that the saying goes 'snug as a bug in a rug'! A rug can make all the difference in a lounge, especially in winter.

Hide Rugs’ collection of sumptuous sheepskin rugs, luxurious cowhide rugs, and soft reindeer rugs is perfect for adding both style and comfort to your space. There is nothing quite like a soft sheepskin rug underfoot to keep toes warm on cold mornings.

4. Bring Nature Indoors

Everything looks a bit grey in winter - so why not bring in some greenery to compensate? Incorporate natural elements into your lounge with potted plants, such as ferns or succulents. Just make sure that any plants you choose are the kind that thrives even in low-light conditions - a dead plant is the opposite of comfort! For a seasonal touch, arrange dried branches, pinecones, or holly in decorative vases. These natural accents pair beautifully with the textures of rugs and throws, completing the cosy, layered look.
