Our favourite bank holiday home essentials for spring

May brings us not just sunshine and warmer temperatures but two glorious long weekends thanks to the early spring bank holiday and May Day at the end of the month. With the weather finally showing signs of summer, what better month to embrace your home and its outdoor space?

These are just a few of our favourite home essentials for this delightful time of the year…

Jugs of fresh flowers

Nothing says spring quite like fragrant, fresh blooms. This is a cheap and easy way to instantly add a hint of colour and freshness to your space. Jugs of flowers in the hallway or kitchen table make your space feel bright and welcoming, as well as delicately perfuming the air. They’re a great visual reminder that the seasons have changed, and nature is awakening after the winter lull. Try rummaging for unusual vases and jugs in charity or second hand stores to add a unique touch.

Seasonal wreaths

Wreaths are becoming more of a year-round style statement. No longer reserved just for Christmas, you’ll often see orange and red wreaths adorning doors around Halloween as autumn creeps in, while pastel blooms often make an appearance on front doors around easter time. This transitional period between spring and summer is also a great opportunity to spruce up your front door. You can easily make your own seasonal wreath with a few supplies from the craft store.

A sheepskin rug

A soft, dense sheepskin rug in a bright white or soft cream makes the perfect transitional addition to your May décor. It’s warm and cosy underfoot during those inevitably wet, chilly days that continue to linger but it can also be thrown over the sofa for movie night when it’s not quite as bright and sunny or – used outside as the ultimate comfortable picnic rug when the days are dry and warm.

A reed diffuser

Fragrance really can set the tone for your space and create just the right atmosphere. Perfuming a room is easily achieved with a reed diffuser. Go for a light, floral or linen scent to mark the arrival of May and the lighter, warmer days. The other great thing about diffusers is you can place them in any room and layer scents by changing things up from one room to the next.

New kitchen linens

Brighten up your kitchen and give it a nice refresh at the same time by changing up your linens. Tea towels, oven gloves and placemats in brighter shades or pastel hues are a wonderfully quick, easy, and pocket-friendly revamp that can transform the heart of the home. If you plan on entertaining over the bank holiday, new tableware and serving platters will complete the look.
