A sheepskin rug is a timeless and luxurious addition to any home, offering both style and comfort. Whether draped over a chair, placed beside a bed, or used as a cosy floor covering, its soft texture is truly unmatched. However, to keep it looking pristine for years to come, proper care and maintenance are essential and regular tasks. With a little love and attention, a sheepskin rug can remain a luxurious feature in your home for many years!
Keep It Fresh with Regular Maintenance
As the saying goes, prevention is better than the cure! One of the simplest yet most effective ways to maintain a sheepskin rug is regular shaking. This gets rid of loose dirt and dust. You can then brush with a wide-toothed metal pet brush, to keep the wool fluffy and prevent matting.
Avoid Sunlight and Moisture
Sheepskin is a natural material, which means it doesn’t respond well to extreme conditions. Exposure to direct sunlight can cause the wool to fade and the hide to dry out, while damp environments can encourage mould growth and cause the fibres to curl. If your sheepskin does get damp, don't panic! Just air-dry it in a shaded, well-ventilated area, and try not to let it happen again.
Spot Clean for Small Spills
Accidents happen, but swift action can prevent lasting damage. In case of a spill, blot the area immediately with a dry, absorbent cloth - without rubbing. A mild wool detergent mixed with lukewarm water can be used for spot cleaning. Gently dab the stain until it lifts, then allow the rug to dry naturally away from heat sources.
To Was or Not to Wash? Proceed with Caution!
Though sheepskin rugs are naturally resistant to dirt thanks to the lanolin in the wool, occasional deep cleaning may be necessary. However, washing should always be a last resort, as it can alter the texture of the hide. If you must wash it, use a specialist wool shampoo and cold water, either in a washing machine on a gentle wool cycle or by hand in a bathtub. Hot water, harsh detergents, and tumble drying are strictly off-limits!
Storage Tips
If you need to store your sheepskin rug, ensure it is kept in a cool, dry place with plenty of air circulation. Avoid plastic packaging, as it can trap moisture - which, as we have established, is an enemy to avoid.
